So this is what happens when Judd Apatow is allowed to make more than one season of a TV show. I have to say, when I watched the first season of Love, I wasn't really sure how I felt about it. When I saw that season two was coming out, I didn't even know if I wanted to watch it. The characters aren't particularly lovable; Mickey is unkind and Gus is such a fucking knob that I often can't stand to watch what he's doing because it's so embarrassing.
Curiosity overcame me, I hate to stop watching a series when I've already invested so much time into it. I had to know what was going to happen, and I was actually pleasantly surprised.
This season we find Gus and Mickey still fumbling through as they work out whether they want to be in a relationship or not. There are numerous bumps and roadblocks along the way, of course, nothing is ever easy with these two.
Fortunately, for my sanity, Gus is a lot less annoying this season. I mean, he's still annoying, but I wasn't hiding my head in my hands every episode to get away from his cringe-worthy antics. We learn a bit more about the characters as well, as we meet Mickey's dad, and see more of Gus and Mickey's friends.
I was quite surprised to hear mentioned in one of the episodes that the whole storyline has spanned only a few weeks. It seemed like it has been months since they met, so that was kind of strange to realise.
After watching season two, I no longer hate the characters. Gus is still pretty annoying, but I've grown to really like Mickey. However, it's still so weird to me that they are together, how did that happen? They really have nothing in common. I feel like it is not going to end well for them. The series has now been renewed for a third season, so I guess we'll find out!
Love is an acquired taste, I think. Set against the dirty backdrop of L.A., it isn't your typical love story set in an idyllic location with funny and lovable background characters to entertain you while the pair get it together. The characters are flawed, which makes them more relatable, and more likeable in a way. I'm keen to see what happens in season three, if Mickey and Gus can actually sustain a relationship, and I'm hoping we see some more of the secondary characters as well.
