Review: GLOW season 3

Vegas, baby! So, I have no self control. Instead of rationing out the series I've been waiting forever for, I binged it all in one day. ONE DAY. I wasn't even sure if I was in the mood to watch it, but I started the first episode, thinking I would watch one or maybe two, then come back to it, but I couldn't stop and had to keep watching. Suddenly it was midnight and there were only two episodes left and well of course I had to finish them. I was left feeling so many feelings. Firstly, that kind of sickly sweet feeling you get when you have eaten all the chocolate, whoops (see, no self control) and realise there is none left. Unfortunately, unlike chocolate, you can't just go out and buy more. It's that devastating feeling of the end of an amazing night, where you are elated at what has transpired but also depressed because it's gone. I also got inspired to write, which I often get when I am immersed in an incredible story, and wish I had had a part in mak...

Review: The Good Place season one

What happens after we die? If we're good do we go to heaven, to be reunited with our grandparents and childhood pets? And if we're bad, head down to hell to be tortured in a fiery landscape for all eternity? Or are heaven and hell not generic places, but our own personal versions of those ideas? Hell being a place where Skrillex and Jamiroquai are played loudly on repeat forever, while in heaven chocolate makes you thin, and you are surrounded by golden retriever puppies, or whatever your particular dreams may be. Maybe we just get reincarnated, destined to live forever in a variety of forms, hopefully becoming better each time. Or then again, maybe it's just a big void, and when we die we get buried, then just decompose in the ground. The Good Place assumes that there are two options, the Good Place, and the Bad Place. After a selfish life with no regard for the feelings of others, Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell) was headed for the Bad Place when, due to an error, w...

Review: Queer Eye (the revival!)

I'm not much of a reality show fan, usually only using it as inspiration for sarcastic and witty observational tweets, with some exceptions of course. Queer Eye is definitely one of those exceptions. Having watched the original series all those years ago, I thought I knew what I was in for when I tuned in to the new Netflix revival, after seeing people raving about it on Twitter. A group of trendy gay guys swoop in and change a clueless straight guy's life with a haircut and a new outfit, fun is had, tears are shed. Well I don't know how well I remember the last series, but the new one is so much more than I expected. It has all the fun of your typical makeover/renovation/cooking show, but with a little extra thrown in as well. Of course, all of your usual reality shows have the 'make or break' moment, when the camera pans in to the contestant, on the verge of tears, as they tell the story of how they beat the odds and triumphed over adversity just to be in t...

Review: Rick and Morty

You may have noticed that I have a love for cartoons designed for adult audiences. I think that animation intended for an adult demographic is highly under-valued as a medium. This seems to be changing a bit as it becomes more popular, with shows such as Bojack Horseman and movies like Sausage Party hitting our screens. While shows like South Park and Family Guy have been around for years, it seems like now more than ever we're seeing more variety, and an increased popularity of this form. I decided to check out Rick and Morty when I saw that it was on Netflix. I'd heard mentions of it here and there, the general consensus being that it was funny. After watching the first episode, I was like yeah, ok, that was kind of weird, kind of funny. I definitely wanted to keep watching, because of the hype and I wanted to see what else there was to it. A few episodes in and I was hooked. There are only 21 episodes, so it didn't take me long to get through the first two seasons. ...

Review: 13 Reasons Why

The way people were talking about 13 Reasons Why all over the internet, I felt like I had to watch it. I saw the first episode and I knew I had to watch it. Hooking you in from the very beginning, 13 Reasons Why will make you want to call in sick to work just so you can binge-watch all the episodes. The series follows Clay Jensen, a high school student who has received a set of tapes from his classmate and friend, Hannah Baker. Hannah recently committed suicide, and on the tapes are the 13 reasons why. Each reason is a person Hannah knew, someone that hurt her in some way, and they each get their own tape. Hannah's plan for the tapes is for each person to hear them and pass them on to the next person. When they arrive on Clay's doorstep he struggles with his emotions as he listens to each tape. He feels the need to confront each person when he hears their tape, to question them, to make sense of it all, to try and make things right somehow. 13 Reasons Why is so captiv...

Review: Love season 2

So this is what happens when Judd Apatow is allowed to make more than one season of a TV show. I have to say, when I watched the first season of Love, I wasn't really sure how I felt about it. When I saw that season two was coming out, I didn't even know if I wanted to watch it. The characters aren't particularly lovable; Mickey is unkind and Gus is such a fucking knob that I often can't stand to watch what he's doing because it's so embarrassing. Curiosity overcame me, I hate to stop watching a series when I've already invested so much time into it. I had to know what was going to happen, and I was actually pleasantly surprised. This season we find Gus and Mickey still fumbling through as they work out whether they want to be in a relationship or not. There are numerous bumps and roadblocks along the way, of course, nothing is ever easy with these two. Fortunately, for my sanity, Gus is a lot less annoying this season. I mean, he's still annoyi...

Review: Please Like Me

*Please note that this review is for seasons 1-3, as I have not seen season 4 yet because I can't find it. It took me until the series was actually over until I started watching Please Like Me, so I'm very behind the times, what's new.  Luckily, the first three seasons are on Netflix, so I binge-watched them all. Unfortunately, season four is not yet on Netflix and is no longer on iView, and I can't even find it to download, so I guess I'm stuck for awhile.  I love this show. It's the type of show that I watch and think, 'Not only do I love watching this, but I am also jealous that I was not somehow involved in making it.' It revolves around Josh, who we meet as he gets dumped by his girlfriend Claire, realises that he's gay, and is informed that he has to take care of his mother, who just tried to commit suicide. A lot for any twenty year old to deal with, but Josh seems to take it in his stride. He also has support from his best friend and...
