The Melbourne International Comedy Festival is back! One of my favourite
times of year. It's just cold enough to bring out
the cute scarves and jackets, but not so cold that you refuse to leave the house. The streets are full of happy people, and Melbourne seems a
little bit more shiny, reminding us why we love it here.
You know when you get a message from a friend, saying 'OMG guess who I just saw?', or 'SO...' and you're like:
Well, that's what Joel Creasey's show is like. It feels like a big gossip sesh with your pals, and I am Here. For. It.
Joel is practically everywhere, you may have seen him hosting the Mardi Gras, the Royal Wedding, Eurovision, a couple of reality TV shows, being a contestant on I'm a Celebrity....Get Me Out of Here! and as a guest of a number of other shows. However if you haven't seen his stand up, you are missing out.
It's such a fun show, from the video montage at the start, to Joel's high energy all the way through, the room has a great vibe, and you feel like you are a part of something, not just watching someone monologue at you.
Joel is, without a doubt, a star, yet his stories about being awkward, and a bit of a dickhead, are so relatable, and authentic, as if being a massive TV and comedy star is no big deal and could happen to any of us.
So if you want to leave a show feeling good, and revitalised then try to get yourself some tickets to Drink. Slay. Repeat. before they're all sold out!
Where else can you get a Joel fix?
- Sisters on Netflix, it's a great Australian show, and Joel has a role playing the lovable Oscar.
- His book, Thirsty
- Hosting Eurovision on SBS (starts May 15, can't wait!)
- Probably just turn on the TV, he'll be on somewhere
The
important questions:
How
long? 60 minutes
Should
I be scared to sit in the front row? No
Is
there a bar at the venue? Yes
Will
I enjoy this? Yes, especially if you like gossip, bitching about celebrities, and behind the scenes stories from TV.
Also, a tip: Get there early! There are a few shows on at the Forum, and they scan your tickets as you enter the building so the line can get ridiculously long. And then you will get inside to find the bathroom line incredibly long, causing you to rush into the theatre, then have to sneak past everyone in the very crammed aisle to get to your seats. Get there early.
You
can see Joel at the Forum until April
21. Get tickets

Comedy Festival tips:
If
driving, book your parking before you go, most of them are only about
$10, and there's lots of options, so you're likely to get something
close to your venue: https://www.wilsonparking.com.au/book-a-bay You
can also earn some Velocity Frequent Flyer points, which is a bonus.
See
someone new! It's fun to go and see new comedians, why not take a
risk and see someone you've never heard of? They're also usually a
lot cheaper than the big names! Why not try something a bit different
too, as well as stand-up there's lots of improv and other types of
comedy to see. Head to Town Hall and you'll be handed lots of flyers
and be able to grab some last minute tickets.
Support
Light The Way Home, a program that allows performers in need a safe
way home from the festival. Many performers are new and have late
shows, and aren't earning heaps of money, so the cost of an Uber or
taxi every night can really add up. Light The Way Home is collecting
donations, which the Festival is matching up to $10,000. It's a great
idea, especially for the more vulnerable members of the comedy
community. You can donate
