Ah, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, one of my favourite times of year. Where the temperature has dropped enough to bring out the jeans and scarves (ok, well, not this year, hello climate change!), the streets are full of happy people, and Melbourne seems a little bit more shiny.
For my first show of the season, I went to see Rhys Nicholson. I hadn't seen him live before, but had seen him on TV (by which I mean mostly YouTube), and was really looking forward to it.
The show did not disappoint. As someone who is also 30ish and does not feel like a grown up, I found it very relatable. This is not however necessary to enjoy Rhys' comedy, as everybody can relate to the weird shit that parents do, the absolutely bewildering actions of strangers, and the utter state of despair that baby boomers have left the world in for us (ok, maybe not everyone? Sorry parents).
My favourite thing about Rhys is his quick-witted, fast-talking manner. Just when his last punchline has sunk in, he's already onto the next story. I am so glad I finally got to see Rhys live, and I highly recommend the show. Also check out the bar that Rhy's partner Kyran, along with Alex Dyson (familiar names if you are a Triple J listener) have opened, right nearby so you can go after the show. The important questions:
How long? 60 minutes
Should I be scared to sit in the front row? No
Is there a bar at the venue? Yes
Will I enjoy this? Yes, especially if you like observational comedy (think, your friend telling you about something that happened in their life, but if they were actually really funny).
You can see Rhys in the Banquet Room at The Victoria Hotel until April 21. Get tickets here: https://www.comedyfestival.com.au/2019/shows/rhys-nicholson-nice-people-nice-things-nice-situations
More Comedy Festival tips:
If driving, book your parking before you go, most of them are only about $10, and there's lots of options, so you're likely to get something close to your venue: https://www.wilsonparking.com.au/book-a-bay You can also earn some Velocity Frequent Flyer points, which is a bonus.
See someone new! It's fun to go and see new comedians, why not take a risk and see someone you've never heard of? They're also usually a lot cheaper than the big names! Why not try something a bit different too, as well as stand-up there's lots of improv and other types of comedy to see. Head to Town Hall and you'll be handed lots of flyers and be able to grab some last minute tickets.
Support Light The Way Home, a program that allows performers in need a safe way home from the festival. Many performers are new and have late shows, and aren't earning heaps of money, so the cost of an Uber or taxi every night can really add up. Light The Way Home is collecting donations, which the Festival is matching up to $10,000. It's a great idea, especially for the more vulnerable members of the comedy community.
